Lorena Weiss Obituary

Lorena Weiss, 88, passed away on January 3 with her daughters by her side. She lived with dementia for over 10 years and was residing at an Eau Claire memory care facility.

She was born on June 14, 1935 in Durand; daughter of Frank and Grace (Simpson) Weisenbeck.

Lorena graduated from Mondovi High School in 1953.  After high school she moved to Philadelphia where she worked for an insurance company.

On February 7, 1956, she married Robert Weiss at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mondovi. Celebrating 65 years of marriage in 2021, their commitment to each other, marriage and family is a legacy and great gift to their children and grandchildren.

Lorena and Robert purchased a farm in the Town of Gilmanton in 1956 where they lived, raised their five children (Chuck, Emmy, Nick, Joey, & Jenny) and worked for the next 35 years.  They left the farm in 1991 and moved to the big yellow house 5 miles east of Durand on Highway 10.  After renovations to the house, “Ryan House Bed & Breakfast” opened in November 1991.  She loved listening and learning of her guests’ lives, and they enjoyed her caramel cinnamon rolls. Health issues caused them to leave her beloved “Ryan House” in 2014 and move to Mondovi and then later to Eau Claire.

Lorena was an active and faithful member of the Catholic Tri-Parish Churches. She also served the La Crosse Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. Lorena volunteered as a 4-H leader to help teach her children and others while they were in 4-H. In her later years, she was an active member of the Gilmanton American Legion Auxiliary Post #264.

Lorena enjoyed gardening, baking, sewing, and had a passion for history.  She enjoyed her family and friends through card games, music, and dancing.

She is survived by her four children, Charles (Bonnie) Weiss of Mondovi, WI, Emmy (Ken) Sherrard of Hager City, WI, Nicholas (Shawn) Weiss of Hackberry, AZ, Jenny (Tom) Odegard of Eau Claire, WI; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; siblings, Francis Weisenbeck, Raymond (Joan) Weisenbeck, Tony (Wilma) Weisenbeck, Mona (King) Troensgaard and Lois Machotka; many nieces/ grand nieces and nephews/grand nephews; and other relatives and dear friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son Joseph; grandsons, Blaise Axness, Christopher Weiss, and Travis Weiss; brothers, Robert and John Weisenbeck.
