James Deetz Obituary

James “Jim” Deetz passed away on May 2, 2021 at the age of 89.  He was blessed with a long life filled with family, friends and fun.

Jim grew up on a farm in Gilmanton, WI where the values of hard work and a love of the land were instilled in him from an early age. Jim was a star basketball player in Gilmanton.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1954 and served our country during the Korean War.  He married Mary (Buchholz) in 1954 and they forged a life together in Mondovi having a family, living on a hobby farm and building a business (City Furniture and Appliance) in the city’s downtown.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many Buffalo County deer with his bow. He remained an ardent sports fan throughout his life, and loved to cheer on his grandchildren and great grandchildren in all of their sports endeavors.

Jim was of the generation that believed when you gave your word, a handshake was all you really needed.  He was trust worthy, kind and generous, and always liked to have a good time.  His attitude of gratitude remained intact through his final challenging years as he battled with cognitive decline.  Jim stayed strong until the end.

Jim is survived by four children Deb (Jeff) Lehman of Maple Grove, MN, Ed of San Diego, CA, Barb (John Krahling) of New Richmond, WI, and Dorothy (Tod Drescher) of Marine on St. Croix, MN; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one brother Jerry (Carol) of Owatonna, MN and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Goldyne (Ringger) and his wife, Mary.
