Verna Bump Obituary

Verna "Carol" Bump (Phillipps) courageously lost her battle of four years to colon cancer on June 6, 2016, surrounded by her family. Carol was a strong woman who made sure that cancer did not define her.

Carol was the oldest of four children born on January 19, 1950 in River Falls, WI to the late Robert and Dorothy (Hughes)Phillipps. She grew up on the family dairy farm in Kinnickinnic Township. After graduating from River Falls High School in 1968, Carol worked in the UW-River Falls business office. UWRF is where Carol met her soul mate Eugene "Gene" Bump.

They were married on February 28, 1970. Carol and Gene farmed in River Falls and Mondovi at the beginning of their marriage. The Bump Family Dairy Farm became their livelihood where they raised their three children, Trevor, Cameron and Marissa. Carol worked outside the home at Marten Transport in Mondovi, the VA office in Alma, and the Methodist Church in Mondovi. During the last few years Carol and Gene resided in Eau Claire, to be closer to family and doctors.

For 22 years the Bump Family Farm became home to over 30 foster children. Each child was instantly considered part of the family. Carol worked tirelessly as an advocate for all of their children. You could always hear her in the crowd when she was at football and basketball games, tennis matches or at a Tae Kwon Do meet. Education was extremely important to her. Carol made sure that all of their children got the support, encouragement and tough love they needed. She was always willing to go the extra mile to make sure they were successful. Carol and Gene truly made a difference in many lives.

Gardening was a passion, or better put an obsession. Carol loved spending time in her greenhouse - planting pots and baskets everywhere. She loved looking out the windows of their home in Eau Claire where flowers were in bloom and the birds (especially cardinals) would visit. Carol could answer any question about what to do with any plant. Her friends and family are going to miss calling her for advice.

Besides gardening Carol became very fond of auctions. If she saw an auction sign, the car blinker was on. There was always room for more. She was "Queen of DIY" - that's where the auctions came in handy. She thought it was amazing what you could do with a little elbow grease and some paint. Carol could put a plant in anything and it would look great in the yard.

Family and friends were ever present in Carol's life. She always found time to connect on the phone or go out to lunch. Her laugh and quick wit will be greatly missed.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Dorothy, a sister Deborah Smith (Phillipps), and in-laws Grant and Elsie Bump.

She is survived by her husband Eugene Bump; children Trevor Bump, Mondovi, WI; Cameron (Kim) Bump, Eau Claire, WI; Marissa (Karl) Wong, Hayward, CA. Grandchildren Cheyenne, Andrew, Leah, Claire, Dillon, Ethan, Chloe and Abigail. Brothers: David (Patti) Phillipps, River Falls, WI, and Donald Phillipps, Baldwin, WI. Brother-in-law: Willie (Lisa) Smith, St. Paul, MN. Nieces: Maggie Phillipps, Somorae (Tim) Anderson, Hannah Smith and nephews Zavier Smith and Weston (Libby) Phillipps. She is also survived by her special sons Steve (Tara) Sires, Matt Boe, Doua Xiong, Yang Moua, Kong Xiong and Soua Yang.
