Doris Gumbert Obituary

Doris Gumbert, age 85, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at Sacred Heart Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Mondovi on May 25, 1929, to Ernest and Esther (Heck) Roetter. She grew up on the family farm in Albany Township, Pepin County, WI, and was baptized and confirmed at the Albany Lutheran Church, just a short walk from her home. It was at this church that she took over playing the pump organ for services for her mother in 1943 until 1958 and also taught Sunday school. Besides playing the piano and organ, she also played the accordion. Doris was a member of 4H, earning a trip to the Wisconsin State Fair with her sewing skills. She graduated from Mondovi High School in 1947 and from 1950 to 1960; she worked at the Gillette Hospital in Mondovi as a receptionist and bookkeeper. In 1959, she married Jerry Gumbert, and after taking a three-week honeymoon out west, Doris found herself working side by side with her husband on the farm until they built a house in 1995 about a mile from the farm, and then entered semiretirement until fully retiring in 2005. Doris was a faithful believer in the Lord, besides serving Him at the Albany Church until she was married, she was active in His service at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gilmanton, Wisconsin. There she made banners, was an active member in the Ladies Aid up until June of 2014,attended many Lutheran Women's Missionary League Rally's prepared and served food for many church functions, and other areas of service too numerous to mention.
Family was her pride and joy, Doris dearly loved to babysit her grandchildren and attend their many school functions and sporting events. She never stood still for very long and having a creative mind, she had many hobbies: Knitting; sewing clothes; quilting; ceramics; and baking cakes for weddings, baptisms, confirmations, anniversaries, and birthdays. Doris was a member of a bowling league for many years at the Valley Supper Club in Mondovi. She also liked to travel when farm life permitted. Doris felt family and local history was important, assisting in putting together family tree's for her side of the family as well as Jerry's, and gathering information for local church records and histories and the city of Gilmanton, providing information and photographs when she could.
Doris will be dearly missed by her husband Jerry of 55 years, son Clyde (Debbie) Gumbert of WI, daughter Nancy (Erick) Vitalis of WI.; 7 grandchildren, Ryan (Sabina) Vitalis, Brooklyn (Travis) Emerson, Lindsay (Justin) Redetzke, Amber Tomlinson, Cody Tomlinson, Kendra Gumbert, and Weston Gumbert, as well as 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 5th at Zion Lutheran Church, Mondovi, WI, with a one hour visitation prior to funeral at 10:00 am and Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 am. Pastor Paul Woebbeking will officiate. Burial will be at the Gilmanton Cemetery, Gilmanton, WI. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Gilmanton; Buffalo County Historical Society; or the Buffalo County Humane Association.
