Bernice Engen Obituary

Bernice Ruth Engen, age 83, Eleva, passed away peacefully at the American Lutheran Home, Mondovi, WI. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 with her family by her side. Bernice was born January 10, 1931, in rural Strum, WI, to Malvin and Rowena (Olson) Skoug. In her early years Bernice attended Big Creek School in rural Eleva. On August 19, 1950 she married Alton E. Engen of rural Eleva and to this union seven children were born. Together they farmed the Engen family farm until retiring and moving to Eleva in March of 1998. Bernice was a member of Eleva Lutheran Church and active in the ladies aid and circle. She enjoyed her monthly birthday club and local quilting groups. Bernice was a past member of the Howdy Pardner's Square Dance Club, the Big Creek Homemaker's club and the Trempealeau County Farm Bureau. She was also crowned Trempealeau County Farm Bureau 1991Women of the Year. Bernice was an avid quilter, making special quilts for each of her grandchildren as well as other family members and friends. Bernice loved her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and providing daycare for many of them. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking and providing meals for her family. She was known for her Norwegian baking and her cookie jar was always full.
Bernice is survived by her children: Dale (Linda) Engen of Mondovi, Karen Engen of Sun Prairie, Janet (Raymond) Turja of Waukesha, Lori (Darin Hillestad) Engen of Eleva, Darrel (Angela) Engen of Strum, Bonnie (Dale) Herbenson of Whitehall and Larry (Karla) Engen of Eleva; her grandchildren: Elissa (Charles) Yang of Carlsbad, CA., Jennah Engen of Mondovi, Antoni (Philip) Tarkowski of Milwaukee, Derek (Alicia) Knopps of Eau Claire, Dana Leigh Knopps of Eleva, Wyatt, Kaleb and Kloe Hillestad of Eleva, Jessa Engen (Matt Payne) of Eleva, Anthony, Dustyn, and Jocelyn Topper of Strum, Justyne and Braxtyn Engen of Strum, Ryan Herbenson (Jenny Hill) of Roseville, MN, Nicole Herbenson of Minneapolis, MN, Maggie and Tanner Engen of Eleva, and Jacob and Nick Thompson of Eleva; and her great-grandchildren: Shay Engen and Callen Yang; a brother, Russel (Connie) Skoug of Apple Springs, TX; a sister Esther (Philip) Gunderson of Shawnee, OK, and many nieces and nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alton, her sister and brother-in-law Violet and Ernest (Barney) Bradison, her sister and brother-in-law Mavis and Lavern Engen, and her great-grand daughter Sophia Hope Knopps. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Eleva Lutheran Church in Eleva, WI., with the Rev. Kermit Solem officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday May 26, 2014 at the Kjentvet-Smith Funeral Home in Eleva from 4 to 7 p.m. with devotion at 3:30pm, and one hour prior to service at the church.
