Roger H. Cook

Roger H. Cook, 89, of Altoona, formerly of Mondovi, passed away Sunday, February 12, 2012 at Grace Edgewood in Altoona, WI with his family at his side.
He was born on March 4, 1922 in Mondovi to Glenn and Louise (Hansemann) Cook. Roger graduated from Mondovi High School in 1939 and then served in the Civilian Conservation Corp at Camp Nelson from October 9, 1939 until March 31, 1941. He later served in the U.S. Maritime Service. On December 30, 1945 he married Florence Weiss in Cochrane. From 1946 until 1953 he worked for Buffalo County. For the next thirty years he worked at Uniroyal as a tire builder until his retirement in 1981.
Roger liked fast pitch softball (where he excelled as a pitcher), enjoyed fishing, especially catching bass on the Red Cedar River and panfish on the Mississippi River. He looked forward to hunting at his cabin in Minong with his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, senior pool league and watching sporting events, both his grandchildren's and professional.
He is survived by four children, Gail (Dick) McGee of Eau Claire, Dan (Doris) Cook of Eau Claire, Beth (Steve) Segerstrom of Mondovi and David (Lynn) Cook of Chippewa Falls, WI; nine grandchildren, Michele (Chris) Mueller, Jamie (Tim) Smith, Laura Cook (Nate Wagenaar), Emily (Doug) Goon, Matthew (Kelly) Segerstom, Christopher (Paige) Segerstrom, Cole (Bridget) Segerstrom, Brittany Cook (Nate Blodgett) and Caden Cook (Jessie Pitch); five great grandchildren, Hallie, Lindsey and Andrew Mueller, Peyton and Karter Segerstrom; a brother, Nick Cook of Mondovi; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Florence in 1980; his parents; a brother, Russell Cook and a sister, Marion Duncanson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Kjentvet - Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi with Rev. David Whelan officiating. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mondovi Veteran's Group.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at the Kjentvet - Smith Funeral Home in Mondovi.
The family would like to thank Grace Edgewood Assisted Living for their wonderful care and making his last years so enjoyable. Also thanks to St. Joe's Hospice and C.H.P. for all their kindness and care.

Kristi Solberg Roger was married to my Grandmother's (Esther Lehman Hanseman)sister. He and his sister,(Marion Cook Duncanson) were cousins and contemporaries of my mother ( Iva Hanseman Solberg.) My parents, Iva and Douglas Solberg were laid to rest at Tell Cemetary in June 2006. May all of these wonderful people rest in peace with their dearly beloved Roger.

Myrna Melrose Ridings I was sad to read on line about the death of your Dad.
I was one of your baby sitters when you were very young children. I lived with my family (Stan and Edna Melrose) on a farm in Paradise Valley and my parents were close friends of both the Weiss and Cook families.My husband and I live in Dallas, TX. We do spend part of our time in WI with family and friends.
