Jerry Gumbert Obituary

Jerry B. Gumbert, age 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 24th, 2016 at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi, WI, after a
short illness.

He was born on December 31, 1921, in Eau Claire, WI, at Luther Hospital, to William and Edna (Branger) Gumbert. He lived in the Gilmanton, Wisconsin, area most of his life; although after his father died in 1928, he lived with his mother and her sister and husband, Carl and Emma Morton, in LaCrosse, WI.

In 1932, he and his mother moved back to Gilmanton. His mother died in 1935 and Jerry was raised by his half-sister, Phyllis (Elmer) Buchholz. Jerry graduated from Gilmanton High School in 1939. After graduation, Jerry worked for local farmers and did logging in the woods surrounding the Gilmanton community. In 1941, he attended a trade school in Wichita, Kansas, and then went to Baltimore, Maryland, to work at an aircraft factory.

When he arrived, however, he was told there was no job. Jerry returned to Wisconsin and in January of 1942, he took a job on the LaVur Shauger dairy farm in Marion, Wisconsin. He was inducted into the Army in 1945 and became an MP and served in France, Belgium, and Germany during World War II. After he was discharged in late 1946, he used the GI bill for agricultural training, and in 1947, he purchased his uncle's farm (Sever Severson) in Turner Valley, just outside of Gilmanton.

On August 1, 1959, he married Doris Roetter at Zion Lutheran Church in Mondovi, WI. They raised two children; Nancy and Clyde. Jerry served on the Buffalo Memorial Hospital Board in Mondovi during the mid 70's. He was also on the Buffalo County Sesquicentennial committee in 1997-1998. He was Baptized and Confirmed in 1936 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gilmanton and served for many years there in one capacity or another; from building committee member to treasurer to president of the congregation.

His true love was farming and he was never far from his cows. He also was an amateur meteorologist and loved recording the weather and for many years called in reports on rainfall, snowfall, and temperature to a regional weather station. He never stopped learning throughout his entire life and had a love of books, scientific magazines, Civil War history, and travel when farm life permitted. He was an avid sports fan and loved to watch his kids and eventually grandkids play whichever sport the season presented. In his later years, he enjoyed caring for his several bird feeders, 365 days a year. He was also a member of the Gilmanton American Legion Post.

Jerry will be dearly missed by his family: Son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Debbie Gumbert; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Erick Vitalis; 7 grandchildren: Ryan (Sabina) Vitalis, Brooklyn (Travis) Emerson, Lindsay (Justin) Redtzke, Amber Tomlinson, Cody Tomlinson, Kendra Gumbert, and Weston Gumbert as well as 7 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Donald (Loretta) Roetter, and nieces and nephews Orla (Mike) Sather, Craig Buchholz, Virgene (Ronald) Laehn, Karn (Matt) Mohn, and David (Jennifer) Roetter and special cousin Joyce (Morton) King as well as many other cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Doris, his parents, his half-sister and brother in-law Phyllis and Elmer Buchholz, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 5th at Trinity Lutheran Church of Gilmanton, WI, with a one hour visitation starting at 10:00 till the time of service. Pastor Paul Woebbeking will be officiating. Burial will be at the Gilmanton Cemetery, Gilmanton, Wisconsin, following the service.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mondovi Historical Society, the American Legion Gilmanton Wisconsin Post, or Trinity Lutheran Church, Gilmanton, WI.
